Welcome!

Feeding families spiritually and physically.

Benny's day often begins before 9:00 am and ends slightly after 9:00 pm. It is spent tending to the needs of others, doing bread runs, managing distribution, and unloading 200 pound pallets from trucks, among other things. One would expect this of the average warehouse worker during busy season, but this is not an employee. Benjamin Peyton is The Bread Ministry's founder and Executive Director.

The Bread Ministry, a non-profit organization, began innocently enough in 1994 when the church he attended needed a new place to store the bread it received from a fellow member. Benny had an extensive background in warehousing and distribution, and offered to store the bread in his garage and distribute it from there. People began coming to his garage to pick up the breads, cakes, and other items that were available to feed themselves and others. Needless to say, word spread quickly. Soon, 5,000 people a month were being fed from that garage. The ministry moved into a warehouse facility in 2001. Since then, the number has grown to 22,000. Now The Bread Ministry is able to feed families not only in Hampton Roads, but as far away as Kansas City.

While this is definitely a blessing, the figures remain startling. It is estimated that 40,000 children in the Hampton Roads area, alone, go to bed hungry every night. This number does not include their parents, or other adults who are out there hungry. Hampton Roads is only one of many communities in the United States. This means the national figures must be even more staggering. Many people and churches send money overseas to help feed the needy. That is fine, yet it is our own communities that are neglected and people who continue to go hungry.

Help!

The Bread Ministry now feeds between 18,000 and 22,000 people per month, and are happy to report that 98% of monetary donations goes toward feeding the needy. Please consider partnering with us as 300 new partners are needed to buy much needed equipment, supplies, and to add space to our warehouse. All contributions are tax deductible.
